Casillero del Diablo Cellars

Looking for a new way to protect his precious wines, Don Melchor Concha y Toro turned to Chilean folklore. nowing how superstitious the townspeople were and how much they feared otherworldly phenomena, he spread the rumor that strange events occurred in their cellars that could only be explained in one way: the devil dwelled in their cellars. Driven by the imagination of the locals, every sound in the cellar, every echo, shadow and shape, added value to the story. Quickly, the rumor became legend … and the bottles stopped disappearing.

This is the story of the legend that gave our wines a unique name: Casillero del Diablo, a portfolio destined to cross borders and become one of the most famous Chilean wines in the world.

A little bit of history

The heart of the vineyard in Pirque is the “Casona”, a colonial-style house with Italian accents, surrounded by the oldest vineyards in Maipo Alto. Here begins the history of Viña Concha y Toro, when more than 130 years ago its founder, Don Melchor de Concha y Toro, planted the first vines.

The vineyard tour guides will explain all the milestones and anecdotes of this history. Knowing Don Melchor and his vision, you will not only discover the origins of Viña Concha y Toro, but also those of Chilean wine culture.

To visit Viña Concha y Toro is to know the origin of the most important wine company in the country, founded in 1883 by Don Melchor Concha y Toro, and at the same time, to delve into a piece of Chilean history.

Through select tours you will be able to learn more about the construction techniques that were used in the 19th century. La Casona, for example, with its 4,000 m2 surface area and six meters high, was built in 1875 with architectural influences from France, Italy and the old Chilean farmhouses built with lime and stone. The old wine cellars, meanwhile, have withstood the passage of time and the harshness of nature.

You can also walk through a 22-hectare park designed by the Frenchman Guillermo Renner, a landscaper who was hired while being in Chile to beautify different sites in preparation for Chile’s centenary. It was he who designed the gardens of the National Congress, the Parque Forestal and the Plaza de Armas.

And if the myths catch your attention, you will discover in depth why and where one of the best-known wine legends worldwide was created: the legend of Casillero del Diablo.
